Vikash Yadav Charged in U.S. Conspiracy to Assassinate Khalistani Leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun
Vikash Yadav, or 'CC-1, is the former officer of India's Research and Analysis Wing who has been charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with conspiring to murder the Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Yadav is still at large, and this indictment fuels tensions further between India and Western powers.
Background and Charges
Yadav is a 39-year-old former senior field officer with R&AW and has served in the Central Reserve Police Force. He allegedly coordinated the attempt from India; Grewal believed that Nikhil Gupta, imprisoned in the U.S., had been hired to do the dirty work.
According to the U.S. authorities, Yadav had shared all the necessary information about Pannun, from his New York address to other identification information that he had been sharing with Gupta. Hence, Yadav has been included in the FBI's wanted list and is charged with conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and money laundering.
Details of the Murder Plot
Court records indicated that Yadav hired Gupta in May 2023 for the murder assignment. Gupta was apparently trying to connect with a underworld contact, but the man was actually a confidential informant for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Yadav was willing to accept $100,000 for the murder contract, and he arranged for a down payment of $15,000 to be made in Manhattan.
Nikhil Gupta
Nikhil Gupta was apprehended in Prague in 2023 and was extradited to the United States in June 2024. He has murder-for-hire and conspiracy charges connected with the failed assassination. Gupta reportedly was talking over another target, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, killed in Canada, and said that the New York murder could take place sooner than sooner.
Yadav's contacts are being appealed to by the FBI which urges everybody with information to get in touch with their closest office or American embassy.
